Make Taking Next Steps A Matter Of Both Courage And Caution

I know that at first, this may seem like a conflicted reality … but actually it is a balanced, biblical principle.

Seriously, it is!

Do you recognize these words … “See then that ye walk circumspectly?”

You may not recognize them but they are found for us in Ephesians 5:15 … in the King James Version of our Bible.

Here is this same verse in a more modern translation …”Look carefully then how you walk,” … that’s better right?

This passage goes on to say, “not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

This is Paul’s way of expressing this principle …

It is a dangerous thing to separate these two because together they provide us with the only pathway that enables us to walk in wisdom.

Walking only in courage is not wise … one can become irritable, impatient or intolerant and by walking only in caution, one can become indecisive, intimidated and inconsistent.

True wisdom is found only when we balance courage and caution.

Dan Rockwell in his article, “How To Bring Caution And Courage Together” captures a piece of this for us, “The truth is that a person without caution is dangerous. Caution is a healthy part of the process. We can use caution to rule out things we can’t do so we can courageously identify, explore, and act on things that we can do. Caution on its own is self-affirming stagnation. Caution anticipates failure, if we aren’t careful; it prevents us from doing things that matter”.

I think all of us have felt this and battled against it. This is no easy road and certainly not something that can be mastered. We literally have to make this happen … and it is our choice.

This is a balanced, biblical principle … and it is life-changing in every way.

Here are some things that we know …

▪ taking next steps is a matter of both desire and discipline
▪ taking next steps is a matter of both purpose and passion
▪ taking next steps a matter of both intercession and intentionality
▪ taking next steps is a matter of both progress and peace
▪ taking next steps is a matter of both wisdom and will
▪ taking next steps is a matter of both prayer and priority

Making these choices will help us … it really will!

I do hope that you are … I really do!
